Project One: Marble Run
Project
One: Mixed Media Marble Run
Description:
In groups of two we will create a
sculptural and functional marble run.
Each group will receive an 8 foot length of 1X2 board which you will use
to create the main part of the track, but you can also use any other materials
as you see fit. The total structure
should be at least 5 feet in any one direction (length, width,or height).
One major requirement is that the
marble must increase and decrease in speed at least once during the course.
This can be achieved through loops, spirals, elevation, and also different
kinds of materials- Think about WHY you choose a specific materials. You must also use a variety of attachment
modes which may include: glue, thread, tape, Velcro, nails, screws. Attachments must also be clean-no globs of
glue. Craftsmanship is VERY important,
and the structure should be visually pleasing utilizing the elements and principles
of design we discuss as well as functional.
This project has several aspects and may seem overwhelming
at times, but this may help focus your efforts in the right direction:
- Get a
marble so you know what size hole to drill and can do test runs.
- Decide
lengths of tracks and cut out the 1X2-Drill holes in correct ends
- Think
about structure of the whole piece and how you will connect pieces
together
Drawings:
As part of
this assignment you should include some sketches of your ideas, process, and
the finished structure. Also record any
interesting observations or solutions to problems that you encountered along
the way.
Objectives:
This project is meant to
introduce you to the
elements and principles of design. It
will also familiarize you with different types of materials and how you can
manipulate them to interact with each other. It should also stimulate your
creative thinking and exercise your ability to problem solve by using materials
that are readily available. This is a
critical ability in art, but also any part of life.
Materials:
Wood- popsicle sticks, tree branches, scrap pieces of wood
you can manipulate
Metal- wire, scrap metal-lids to pots/pans, etc.
Paper- cardboard, paper of any kind
Plastic- milk jugs, old blinds, rubber
Fabric- foam (not Styrofoam), old clothes
Ceramic- old dishes, flower pots, etc,
Found Objects- anything you can find that will aid you in
making a successful and innovative sculpture.
Be creative
*Please no Styrofoam, melting plastic, or glass- nothing
toxic.
