Project Four: Self Portrait
Project
Four: Self Portrait
Description:
Design a form that represents yourself. This form can be a literal representation of
you or just an object that reflects a part of you. The form should be at least
5 inches
For this project we will learn about modeling a solid clay
form and then making a two-piece mold.
Two-piece molds can be handy to make a basic consistent form to which
you can later add embellishments and additions.
Your finished form should be embellished in some way and not just the
form that came out of the mold. You can
use clay or other materials to do this, but the main form should be clay from
your mold.
The finished piece should be a visually compelling
composition that utilizes the elements and principles of design, and there
should be some thought to the finish, i.e.-color, texture, cold finish, slip
decoration. It should also be displayed
appropriately, using skills we have discussed in class.
When making molds there can be NO UNDERCUTS!!!!!!! I will explain this, but you must remember!!
NO UNDERCUTS!
Drawings:
Make a collage of images that are important to you and in
some way reflect yourself. Then pick
five items and sketch each individually on full-pages in your sketchbook. I will discuss these drawings with you next
class to help you decide which one would be best suited for the mold-making
process.
Objective:
To learn the benefits and process of mold-making, and create
an understanding of different methods of
sculpture, such as additive and subtractive.
Also, to continue working with the elements and principles of design and
how to incorporate them into your sculptures.
Materials:
The main materials we are working with are clay and
plaster. As usual, you are welcome to
incorporate other materials, ie.- fiber, paper, metal, wood, as long as the
main structure is the clay form from your mold.
